What is a Journal?

Journal is an app developed by Apple to help users write journal entries and easily insert photos, videos, and other content. Your recordings are stored locally on your iPhone, and you can have backups in iCloud.

The journal provides prompts called Reflections that you can write about. Some reflections the app gave me included: “Think of something you love to do and why it brings you joy” and “Describe someone in your life who you really appreciate but forget to thank.”

The app may also access certain data and give you suggestions on what to write based on that data. For example, on my first weekend with the Journal, I was asked to write about a cafe and park I visited. You can control what data types and other applications Journal can access to create these suggestions.

How to get log?

Apple included Journal in the iOS 17.2 update so if you downloaded the update — or later updates like iOS 17.4 — you should see the app on the home screen.

How secure is the Journal?

According to An apple, the app has end-to-end encryption between your device and iCloud and uses device processes to create journal suggestions, including Reflections. This means the data it uses stays on your iPhone.

“No one but you has access to your log — not even Apple,” the company wrote online.

You can also require the app to ask for your FaceID or password after being inactive for 1, 5 or 15 minutes. If you don’t want to risk it, you can set it to lock immediately when you switch apps or your iPhone goes to sleep — you know, in case of eavesdropping siblings or roommates.

How do you write a journal entry?

On the journal home page, you’ll see your recent journal entries plus (+) sign at the bottom of the screen. Tap the plus sign and you’ll be taken to a new menu.

In this new menu, you’ll see suggested reflections, as well as moments from your day that you can write about, like a photo you took or a podcast you listened to. Tap any of them for a quick preview of the offer, and then tap Start typing. You’ll be taken to a new page that looks similar to a new note in the Notes app, but the suggestion will appear at the top of the screen. You can write your entry on this page and you can add other content such as photos, videos or voice notes.

You can also just write an entry without a suggestion. After you tap the plus sign on the journal home page, there is an option at the top of the new menu that reads New entrance. Tap this and you can write down any thoughts or feelings you have at the moment, or you can add your own content here.

When you’re done, tap Done in the upper right corner and the entry will be saved on the diary home page. You can also edit or update records after they are saved to the home page. Tap the three dots () in the lower-right corner of the recording you want to edit, then tap editing.

What if I need help maintaining a journaling schedule?

Fear not: you can set the app to remind you to journal. A splash screen in Journal asks you to set a schedule when you first open the app.
