Key events
Martin Kaymer, the 2014 winner here, had made a bright start today with birdies on 1 and 5 flashing amid a string of pars. But he got both shots back at once by double-bogey 5 on the par-3 9th. The German is +10 and tied for 57th place. Korea’s Seonghyeon (SH) Kim has the best round so far; he is -3 after 13 holes. All very welcome after yesterday’s 83.
It was a while before we saw what Bryson, Rory, Patrick and Mathieu threw at us. So what about the early game so far at Pinehurst? Scotty Scheffler was the hot favorite coming into this week, but he barely made the cut (+5). A 1-over 71 in the third round confirmed that he will be among the participants this week, so can he at least go out on a high today? He plays first alongside young Irishman Tom McKibbin and has a 25-footer for birdie after finding the green. As it stands, world No. 1 Scheffler is +6, 13 off DeChambeau’s lead and tied for 43rd. His birdie putt looks but somehow ends up behind the back of the hole. Pretty much sums up his weekly moment.
Preamble
It’s the last round at Pinehurst! And what a day awaits us. Will Rory McIlroy win his first major in 10 (ten!) years? Can Mathieu Pavon become the first Frenchman to win a major since Arnaud Massey in 1907 at the Open at Royal Liverpool? Will Patrick Cantlay follow recent US PGA winner and great friend Xander Schauffele by joining the majors club? Those three are all -4 and tied for second, but this week, so far at least, has been the Bryson DeChambeau show. 2020 US Open the winner charmed the galleries on the course and the television audience alike and yesterday knocked him out of the field with a 67 that put him three ahead at -7. Can anyone reel him in or will Bryson destroy the field as he did at Winged Foot four years ago when he won by six? Let the story unfold…
