‘Perplexing’ deliberate rushed behind decision infuriates Essendon fans

[ad_1]

Essendon fans erupted into a chorus of boos after Geelong appeared to have conceded a goal in a tight contest at the MCG.

The Bombers led for most of the night before the Cats jumped out in the third quarter and the nine-point gap quickly exploded after a controversial mid-term decision.

Geelong’s Ryan Myers dropped the ball to his boot on the 50m arc and Essendon youngster Jye Menzie picked up the loose ball just in front of the goal box.

With two Cats players nearby, Menzie opted to run behind him – but the on-field umpire ruled it was deliberate and awarded the 21-year-old a free-kick.

Ollie Dempsey, who gave up chasing Menzies to appeal for the free, was given the set shot on goal and easily converted to put Geelong ahead by 15 points.

Menzie refrained from arguing the decision, but Essendon fans made their feelings known.

“It’s a confusing decision and it leads to a Dempsey goal and this place is about to explode,” Alastair Nicholson said on Channel 7 commentary.

“It looked to me like Menzies was perfectly within his rights to push the ball. Dempsey would have been no more than three meters behind him when he rushed in from behind.”

His co-commentators were desperate for a repeat, with Collingwood premiership winner Daisy Thomas clear about her opinion afterwards.

“It’s an incorrect decision made by the judge,” Thomas said.

Making matters worse for the Bombers, Geelong kicked their fourth successive goal five minutes later to take a 21-point lead into three-quarter time.
