Olivia Rodrigo gigs called off as chaos continues at Manchester’s Co-op Live | Manchester

The stranded Co-op Live arena has postponed shows by Olivia Rodrigo as part of her Guts world tour due to a “technical issue”, hours after the last-minute cancellation of the opening gig for the third time.

Two hours after announcing that A Boogie Wit Da Hoodie would no longer play, the venue confirmed that Rodrigo’s shows on May 3 and 4 have also been cancelled.

Wednesday’s show was due to be the first official event at the 23,500-capacity Manchester venue after several were canceled or postponed in the past two weeks.

The venue said there was a problem during the sound check, and a component of the heating, ventilation and air conditioning system was found to be defective.

X on the arena: “Due to an ongoing technical issue with the venue, the scheduled performances of Olivia Rodrigo’s Guts World Tour on May 3rd and 4th have been postponed. Ticket holders can either retain their tickets or receive a refund at the point of purchase.

Grammy winner Rodrigo is set to perform in Glasgow, Birmingham and London between May 7-18.

A Boogie Wit Da Hoodie has confirmed that “something happened” during his soundcheck, meaning his show had to be cancelled. “I’m also fired up about the situation, but safety comes first.” Manchester, I got you, just stay tuned for further information,” he told X.

His performance was canceled at 6:40 p.m., 10 minutes after doors were due to open at 6:30 p.m. Fans lined up outside the hall.

This is another in a series of problems for the establishment. Rick Astley made a surprise guest appearance in front of around 11,000 arena workers, VIPs and press for the free test event on April 20, but about 4,000 tickets were cancelledsome just an hour before the show, leaving ticket holders furious.

The venue said it was due to “testing critical procedures”, meaning it had to reduce capacity for the event.

The venue apologized and told ticket holders they could instead attend a concert by American rock duo Black Keys a week later. The venue then had to postpone that concert to May 15.

The arena has also postponed two concerts by comedian Peter Kay, who is now due to appear on May 23 and 24.

Gary Rhoden resigned as general manager of the arena last week over delays in opening the venue and after he was criticized for saying some small music venues were “badly run”.

The venue is part of the Oak View Group. Tim Leiweke, its chairman and chief executive, said: “The safety and security of everyone visiting and working at Co-op Live is our highest priority and we could not and will not hold any event until it is absolutely safe to do so.

“Today was a very unexpected situation, but without a doubt the right decision. I deeply apologize for the impact this has had on ticket holders and fans.”

The Co-operative Group said it was disappointed by the announcement and would seek a “full explanation” from Oak View.

“As the naming rights sponsor of Co-op Live, we are shocked by the incident which has led to the late cancellation of tonight’s arena show,” a Co-op Group spokesman said.

“We are relieved that no one was hurt but share the disappointment and frustration of ticket holders, many of whom are Co-op members, with the continued delay in the opening of Co-op Live and the disruption this is causing everyone, who were looking forward to attending events.

“We will be seeking a full explanation from Oak View Group, who are responsible for the building, of the obvious issues arising from this, together with a clear plan from the Co-op Live venue management team at OVG for the opening of the venue and postponement and future events.

“Safety is of course the number one priority and it is extremely important that Co-op members and other ticket holders are able to enjoy events in a venue with the highest levels of security and safety measures.”

Located on the Etihad Campus next to Manchester City’s football ground, the £365m venue is set to host Take That, the Killers, Eric Clapton and Barry Manilow in the coming weeks, and there are plans to host the MTV Europe Music Awards in November.
