Family of teenager Yolonda Mumbulla found dead in Sydney unit break silence

The devastated family of a teenager who was found dead in block c Sydney’s eastern suburbs they said they want someone to be held accountable for her death.

At around 9.20am on Tuesday, emergency services were called to a fourth-floor block of Hardy St in North Bondi, following reports that a woman was unresponsive.

Yolonda Mumbula, 19, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Derek Mumbula, Yolonda’s father, told 7NEWS he only spoke to his youngest daughter last week.

“My daughter… my youngest daughter, she’s gone, I can’t say hello or goodbye, she’s just gone,” he said.

“I spoke to her last week, we sat down and talked, had a nice chat, then she didn’t come home.”

Derek added that he wants someone to be held accountable for his daughter’s death.

“Someone hurt her,” he said.

“All these people are hurt for no reason…my mother, wives and daughter.

“That’s enough, it has to stop.”

Yolonda’s friend Isabel Pike echoed that sentiment, adding that she believed the system had “failed” Yolonda and her six-month-old baby.

“She reached out for help and she was only 19, she had her whole life ahead of her and it’s not fair for her to go through this alone,” she said.

“She was always so happy, all she did was love people, she didn’t deserve this.

“We still don’t know exactly what happened to her, but I don’t know how someone who is such a good person can leave this world so quickly, it’s not right.”

Another friend described Yolonda as a “beautiful girl” and “a very loyal friend.”

“She never had a bad thing to say about anybody,” Alya Pera said.

“She was always very cheerful and bright, even if she had a hard day she said life goes on … she was always very hopeful … I will miss her very much.”

Pera organized a GoFundMe page in memory of my friend.

“With such sad and sudden news, we are asking for your help to give her a beautiful send off,” she said.

“Yolonda always had such an uplifting spirit, she was funny, full of joy and always there to help anyone.”

Neighbors told 7NEWS they were “on edge” after a series of violent incidents in Sydney.

“The police had been here for a while and they shut down the whole street, so we definitely knew right away it was something serious,” neighbor Bracha Kaduri told 7NEWS.

“We are very sad about this… and also shocked.

“I just feel like… what’s going on with this town? I’m a little on edge.”

Two men have been charged

Detectives are looking at a number of lines of inquiry, including accidents, police said.

“An autopsy will be performed to determine the woman’s cause of death,” they said.

A 32-year-old man, who had a warrant out for unrelated drug charges, was arrested at the home and taken to the Waverly Police Department.

Following his arrest on Tuesday, police searched an address on Flood St, Bondi, at around 5.10pm and allegedly found 1g of methamphetamine and cannabis.

Police arrested a 34-year-old man at the home who was also taken to the Waverly Police Department.

The 34-year-old man has been charged with two counts of possession of a prohibited drug.

He has been issued with a Court Attendance Notice to appear at Waverley Local Court on Tuesday, June 18.

The 32-year-old man was charged with an outstanding warrant for theft of a value less than or equal to $2,000, three counts of entering a vehicle or boat without the consent of the owner/occupant, destroying or damaging property less than or equal to $2,000 , obstructing or resisting a police officer in the performance of duties and goods suspected of being stolen on/on the premises.

The 32-year-old was refused bail to appear at Downing Center Local Court on Wednesday.

Investigations are ongoing.
