Teen arrested at NSW museum allegedly found with knives, tactical gear

A 19-year-old man has been arrested after he was allegedly found with knives and tactical equipment at a museum north of Sydney.

Police said they received a distress call about the man at around 12.30pm today.

Officers swooped on the Newcastle Museum on Workshop Way in Newcastle where they arrested him.

The search led police to find and seize items including knives and tactical gear.

“Upon further investigation officers became aware of the existence of a document which was circulated to a number of public figures and the media,” police said. 

The teenager is at Newcastle Police Station. 

“The man is currently assisting police and there is no ongoing threat to the community in relation to this investigation,” police said.

The teenager is understood to have briefly visited the office of Newcastle MP Tim Crackanthorpe.

“I understand there has been an incident in Newcastle today. I have spoken to the police and they are dealing with the situation and have assured me that no one has been hurt,” he said.

“I was notified that the individual was in and out of my office briefly, leaving before making any contact with my staff.”
