The death of a 78-year-old woman is being treated as a domestic violence murder, while her elderly husband is under police guard in hospital and no other suspects are being sought.

Officers were called to a home in Gordon in Canberra’s south for a welfare check after reports of a disturbance about 7.30am on Sunday.

They found the woman’s body in her Togo Place home.

Acting Detective Constable Stephen Ladd said police arrested the woman’s 86-year-old husband at a house about 10km north-east in Faddon.

The man remains in hospital under police guard and is being treated for a possible heart attack.

No charges have been filed.

“We are treating this as suspicious and treating it as a homicide investigation,” Superintendent Ladd told reporters.

Police declined to release details about the crime scene or the woman’s injuries and said an autopsy would determine the cause of death.

Chief Ladd said he did not believe other people were involved and the couple was not previously known to police.

“At this stage the husband is obviously assisting us with our inquiries and because of that family relationship, we are treating this as a domestic violence incident,” he said.

“Incidents like this are tragic and my sincere condolences go out to the friends and family.

“If you think there are mental or physical health issues, especially as people get older, reach out and talk to someone and get the help they need to avoid situations like this.”

Meanwhile, a 43-year-old man has also been arrested in connection with the death of a woman in Darwin.

Police in the Northern Territory said they received reports of an unresponsive woman at a home in Coconut Grove in the city’s north around 12.30pm on Sunday.

A 36-year-old woman was pronounced dead at the scene.

A 43-year-old man presented himself to police at the residence and was arrested, NT Police said in a statement on Sunday.

He remains in custody.

It is believed that the man and the woman know each other.

The scene of the accident has been announced and investigations are ongoing.
