Harley Reid’s AFL Rising Star hopes at risk after dangerous tackle on Darcy Wilson

The AFL The Rising Star Award could lose its top two contenders in just a few hours after that West coast star Harley Reid risked suspension in Saturday night’s loss St Kilda.
The Eagles star went into the clash as clear favorite for the honor following a two-match suspension handed down to Western Bulldogs youngster Sam Darcy earlier in the day.

But Reid now faces being sent off and also ineligible for the Rising Star as a result after a dangerous tackle on Darcy Wilson.
Wilson got a hand play deep from the wing late in the third quarter and tried to burn Reed with a step, only to be collected along the sideline.
Reid grabbed Wilson’s jumper from the back with his right hand and the front with his left, sending the Saints man to the ground.
Wilson landed on his back, his head also hitting the ground with a thud, though he avoided a concussion.
Reid’s tackle yielded a free but the potential for the first suspension of his AFL career was just as pressing.
Eagles senior Will Schofield didn’t necessarily believe it was a dangerous hit, saying it was an act, but he understands the current environment surrounding the concussion.
“The question is probably not whether it deserves a suspension or not – the question is whether it’s a dangerous approach or not,” he said in a comment.
“The result is that Darcy Wilson’s head hit the ground, that will be a stoppage. I don’t think there’s any doubt about that.”
David King said it was “the takeaway we need to take out of the game”.
“That’s all you don’t want,” the Kangaroos double premiership player said.
After further replays, King said: “Darcy Wilson is back on the ground so that’s a huge tick in Harley Reid’s favour, but the technique, the action, that’s a problem for him.”
Reid appears to have been affected by the knowledge that he could face a ban.
He was seen uttering “dammit” at the three-quarter break and quickly had his teammates rallying around him.
Reid faces two weeks off if he receives a one-match suspension, with West Coast playing North Melbourne next weekend – their first meeting since late last year when the No.1 pick was up for grabs – before a Round 14 bye.
The Eagles are back in action against Essendon in Round 15.
Reid’s hopes of landing the Rising Star award as best young player this season received a huge boost when Sam Darcy was handed a two-match ban earlier on Saturday.
Darcy shoots in the back of Collingwood’s Brayden Maynard after the Magpies defender was marked down on Friday night.
The incident was classified as careless behaviour, high impact and high contact.
If the Bulldogs accept the ban or fail to overturn it, Darcy will miss at least important games against the Brisbane Lions and Fremantle.
