The AFP launched “Operation Birkin” in April 2024 after Border Force officers inspected six boxes arriving at Sydney’s Port Botany from Thailand.
When inspecting the shipment, they found boxes of black leather sandals, in the soles of which the drug was believed to be hidden.
The box was addressed to a warehouse in Sydney’s west, police said.
During the investigation into the illegal sandals, the AFP claimed to have observed an attempt by a Malaysian national to take the boxes from the warehouse.
Police tracked down the man and allegedly watched him drive along the Hume Highway from Sydney to Melbourne.
The man was identified and on Thursday afternoon AFP officers arrested the man at his home in Burwood, Victoria.
A number of fake phones were seized and the man was charged with attempted possession of commercial grade methamphetamine.
The crime carries a maximum penalty of life imprisonment.
AFP Sergeant Alex Drummond said the AFP and its partners were committed to preventing the spread of dangerous drugs on Australian streets.
“AFP will continue to work tirelessly to keep these dangerous drugs off the streets and ensure that those who want to poison society see justice,” he said.
“We would argue that this man was prepared to get to Sydney at short notice to pick up this shipment, but the AFP stopped the further distribution of these drugs, preventing millions of dollars from entering the criminal economy.”
The man appeared in Melbourne Magistrates Court yesterday morning and was refused bail.
He will return to the same court on August 30, later this year.
