How to Take a Screenshot on Any iPhone or Android Phone

[ad_1]

There are many reasons why you might want to take a screenshot on your phone. Maybe it’s saving a great Instagram post, documenting the latest fashion for wardrobe inspiration, or maybe archiving a helpful (or funny) text message exchange with loved ones.

Whatever the reason, here are some easy ways to capture yours iPhone or Android screen. Stretch those fingers because there will be a lot of buttons to be pressed. (Real buttons, not figurative.)

How to take screenshots on iPhone

For an iPhone without a home button (any model from iPhone X and later), press at the same time power button and volume up button. But note that if you press these buttons for too long, the shutdown and SOS screen will appear.

When you take a screenshot successfully, you’ll see the screen flash and hear a camera shutter sound (if you’ve turned silent mode off). A thumbnail version of your screenshot will appear in the lower left corner of your screen. You can tap it and go into markup mode to cut, edit or add text right away without having to go into the Photos app first, which is great.

If you don’t want to edit the screenshot, you can simply remove the mini version or wait for it to disappear by itself after a few seconds. By default, your screenshot will be saved in the Photos app.

iOS will also let you take scrolling screenshots, which let you capture multiple pages in one snapshot. You can check out our step-by-step guide for that here.

If your iPhone has a home button, there is a different way to take a screenshot. Press home button and on sleep/wake button at the same time. A mini version of your screenshot will pop up in the lower left corner of the screen.

You can tap it to edit it or share it immediately.

How to take screenshots on Android phones

Android has several different ways to capture what’s on your screen. The universal way is the simultaneous retention of power button and on volume down button. The screen will then flash and a smaller version of your screenshot will appear on the display. This will work on devices like the latest ones Pixel 8 and 8A compositions, as well as of Samsung Galaxy S24 series.

Depending on your phone, an editing window may appear. Otherwise, the screenshot will disappear from the screen. Screenshots are saved to the Google Photos app or your phone’s native gallery app.

Motorola’s three-finger touch method

If you own a recent Motorola phone such as Motorola Edge Plus or Moto G Power 5G, you can use the power and volume button technique or the three-finger method. The latter technique happens to be one of my favorite ways to take a screenshot because it has a very Vulcan, Star Trek door-squeezing vibe to it.

To enable a three-finger screenshot, go into the Moto app, or if you’re using an older Motorola phone, find the Moto Actions menu in Settings. Click on the hamburger menu and go to Moto actionsthen turn on Three finger screenshot. You can tap the description to bring up a quick animated tutorial on how to use it.

Now whenever you want to take a screenshot, just tap on the display with three fingers at the same time. The screen will flash and a screenshot editor will appear.

Samsung’s karate chop technique

Perhaps the most interesting way to take a screenshot comes from Samsung. You can of course use the Android system way with the power and volume buttons. But there are a few other options, one of which involves using the edge of your palm.

To trigger this, hold your hand in a karate chop position (so basically the edge of your hand is perpendicular to the screen) and slide the side of your hand across the entire display. Your phone will then take a screenshot.

To enable this feature, log in Settings and tap the magnifying glass icon. In the search box, type the word “palm” and you will see a menu option called up Swipe with palm to capture. Press the switch to turn it on.

As ridiculous as it sounds, you can take a screenshot of a Samsung Galaxy phone with your palm.

Alternatively, you can log in to Settings > Advanced features > Movements and gesturesthen find Swipe with palm to capture in the list and tap the switch to activate it.

I admit that this gesture is not as reliable as pressing the power and volume buttons, but you can do it with one hand by simply touching the screen of your phone. Plus it’s a fun party trick.

Samsung’s Edge panel lets you take precise screenshots

Samsung didn’t stop with the palm gesture; using the Edge panel on Galaxy phones, you can also take screenshots with greater accuracy.

To enable the Edge panel, sign in Settings > Display > Edge panels. Press the switch to turn it on. (Alternatively, search for “edge” in Settings and tap the switch next to Edge panels when it appears.)

When you click on Edge panelswill take you to another screen with a section called Panels. Click on that and select A smart choice from the options to add these capabilities to your Edge panel.

When you want to capture the screen of your Galaxy phone more precisely, open the Edge panel by swiping from the right edge of the display to the left. With the Edge panel open, swipe again through the different panels until you reach the A smart choice. From there, you can choose a rectangular capture, oval capture, or animation capture, which allows you to make a GIF.

After you select how you want to capture the screen, a box or oval will appear. You can resize and position the tool on the part of the screen you want to capture, then tap Done. Press the arrow in the lower right corner of the screen to save the image to your gallery.
