The body of a person who died in an accident in US was found a short distance away after being pulled from the vehicle by a bear, police said.

Massachusetts State Police said they received a call around 11:30 a.m. local time Sunday from a passing truck driver on Route 91 south in Hatfield, a town in Hampshire County in the U.S. state of Massachusetts, who had just seen a partially hidden vehicle vehicle in the woods on the side of the road.

Responding officers found a heavily damaged 2016 Honda Civic in the woods among several trees.

A man’s body was found outside the car, and a bear was observed in the woods near the scene.

Evidence indicates that the bear made contact with the body at some point.

The driver has been identified as Daniel Ducharme, 31, of South Hadley, the Northwestern District Attorney’s Office said Monday afternoon.

The preliminary investigation indicated that sometime several hours before 11 a.m., the Honda was traveling southbound on Route 91 when, for reasons still under investigation, Ducharme lost control of the car, struck the guardrail several times and went off the roadway to the right.

The car then went down an embankment, entered the forest and hit several trees.

State police said evidence and observations at the scene suggest Ducharme likely died as a result of the crash and was either fully or partially ejected from the car and later dragged from the vehicle by the bear. The bear left the area while first responders were on the scene.

Hatfield is a town of about 3,300 inhabitants in Hampshire County, about five miles (8 km) northeast of Northampton.

The investigation into Sunday’s crash continues by state police assigned by the district attorney’s office.
